Samsung Galaxy M offers up Super AMOLED for less

Samsung's 2011 flagship still tantalizingly out of your wallet's reach? Well, you might be tempted by the latest addition to the Galaxy family that's just gone official in Korea. While the shell appears nigh-on indistinguishable from the previously announced Galaxy R, there are some notable spec differences. The M totes a four-inch Super AMOLED screen, not the Super Clear LCD found on the R, while there's also only a single-core 1GHz processor here, not the dual-core Tegra 2 found on its older brother. The camera has also felt the pinch, shrinking from a five megapixel to a three megapixel offering. The Gingerbread handset measures in at just under 10mm thick, while still packing a TV tuner and a metallic body more similar to the Wave series than the plastic-backed Galaxy family. The M moniker places it in the high-end affordable spectrum, according to Sammy's latest naming strategy, priced at around $500, although there's no news on a release outside of its homeland just yet. The phone will arrive in three confusing color options; Platinum Silver [above], Blue Black and Lavender Pink. Tunisia considering handing over ex-Libya premier (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? The visiting Tunisian president is setting conditions for handing over a Libya who was prime minister under ousted ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

Tunisia is holding the ex-prime minister, Baghdadi al-Mahmudi. Beginning his first state visit to Libya on Thursday, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki said Tunisia would have to be assured that al-Mahmudi would get a fair trial and would not be harmed.

Marzouki told a joint news conference with Libyan leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil that the ex-premier could be handed over for trial in Libya "after establishing a democratic state and civil institutions."

Gadhafi was captured and killed in October. Libya insists it will try his captured son, Seif al-Islam, though Libya does not yet have a functioning judicial system.

Samsung's New Galaxy Tab TV Ad Feels a Lot Like an Apple iPad Ad

The legal battle between Samsung and Apple has going on around the world with Apple claiming that Samsung had "slavishly" copied the iPad design. Apple and Samsung have traded lawsuits in a number of countries trying to get each other's products banned from sale.

Outside of the lawsuits, Samsung has been aggressive with their recent set of U.S. TV ads openly mocking iPhone users.

Their newest Korean ad, however, seems to take cues from Apple's own advertising style, focusing on a more emotional connection with the viewer.

The ad depicts a father and daughter playing with a Galaxy Tab in a sequence of shots reminiscent of Apple's own iPad ads. The voice over says (rough translation):

You try to have fun with me, you try to win against me, you ask me millions of questions, you sit on my lap, you want to stay beside me all the time, strangely, when I stay with you time passes very quickly. This is a precious time.

The ad was posted to YouTube on December 14th. For reference, Apple's own ads have long followed a similar style, focusing on experience than specs: We'll Always, Love, and Learn. While Apple doesn't have an exclusive claim to this style of ad, it just shows how Samsung is trying to position their products comparably to Apple.

The song in the background of the ad is Blue Sky by Rabbit!

Verizon's $2 convenience fee inconveniences the FCC

Just like hard working humans, giant companies like to get paid consistently and on time for services rendered. But Verizon's method for motivating customers to pay up -- in the form of a $2 convenience fee -- isn't sitting so well with consumers, or the FCC. A Federal Communications Commission official confirmed that the fee hasn't gone unnoticed, saying "on behalf of American consumers, we're concerned about Verizon's actions and are looking into the matter." The $2 "payment convenience fee" is scheduled to hit consumers beginning on January 15th, but if the FCC doesn't step in before then, you can still skip the toll by signing up for AutoPay, or making your way to a different carrier.
