DALLAS -- Donnie Nelson said he would love to bring Eduardo Najera and the Texas Legends to Mexico.

Najera on Friday was officially introduced as the D-League team's new head coach after retiring from the NBA earlier in the week. Najera will also have a stake in ownership, as well as join Nelson, who is the Dallas Mavericks' president of basketball operations and Legends co-owner, in the Mavs' front office.

The hiring of Najera, beloved in his native Mexico, could very well push the Legends to seek to play games in Mexico.

"We would love to work with the NBA and figure out how we can increase our presence in Mexico and greater Latin America," Nelson said. "I think the uniqueness of the D-League is that we can be a little more flexible and easier to move around than an NBA team. The NBA?s had a long history of taking teams south of the border. I was involved in one in one of Eddie?s first couple years and they?re still talking about that.

"I think that the Latino, Hispanic community initiatives are going to take a new level with Eddie?s new position."

Could Najera also serve as the catalyst to deliver an NBA team to Mexico? Commissioner David Stern has long flirted with teams in Europe and obviously the Canadian market has fared well with the Toronto Raptors. For most of the teams in the Southwest and Pacific divisions, a trip to Mexico is a hop, skip and a jump, well shorter than traveling to the East Coast or Pacific Northwest.

The NBA has staged more than 20 games in Mexico over the last 20 years. The Mavs, with Najera on the roster in 2003, played a preseason game in Mexico City. Najera and the Denver Nuggets played the Golden State Warriors in Monterrey in 2006.

Najera, the first Mexican-born player to be drafted in the NBA in 2000 and now the first Mexican-born coach in the NBA or D-League, talked of one day bringing an NBA team to Mexico.

"I'm talking about five, 10, 20 years, but it will be something that I would like to support," Najera said. "That's the reason this makes perfect sense being part-owner of the Legends, being the head coach, working closely with Donnie with the Mavericks. It's sort of a great plan, and basically I can get the experience, and so when I go down to my friends, I can say, hey, this is the way you do things, and hopefully they can buy the idea and hopefully they can make it happen."

Is there an algorithm for suffering? One that calibrates how much empathy we should feel for the victims of genocide? What degree of concern is ?rational?? What degree is excessive, ?obsessed?? Should the degree to which we grieve about, analyze?and react to the threat of?mass murders be calculable objectively?

It would make things easier if we could just take number of actual dead, say, (or the number the killers wanted dead), times the percentage of victim-group killed, maybe multiplied by the logarithm of cruelty of the methodology of mass killing, divided by the number of decades in the past the crime occurred. (Time is a factor: Hitler was famously quoted as saying, in 1939, ?Who, after all, speaks today of the extermination of the Armenians?? After all, the Holocaust took place seven decades ago, the Armenian horror a little more than two decades before Hitler?s remark. Lucky for him there were few ?obsessed? with this mass murder at the time.)

If there were an algorithm for suffering perhaps we would be able to judiciously appraise the claims that there are some among us (mostly Jewish) who are ?holocaust obsessed.? It?s the new fashionable meme for those who don?t want to be overly troubled by the memory of the death camps and looming threats of a second holocaust. The term enables those who use it to suggest that those more concerned than they are "obsessed" in an unseemly way.

It's the word "obsessed" that seems problematic to me. It implies a bright line between legitimate interest and something else, something over-intense, feverish, and counterproductive. But where is that line? How much time should we spend worrying about the threat of future Holocausts and genocides, not just those involving Jews.

The much-lauded German novelist W.G. Sebald has been quoted saying "no serious person thinks of anything else." This was obviously a form of hyperbole designed to jolt people out of complacency. But it raises the question: How much does a serious person think about the Holocaust? What does it mean to be "obsessed" and what does it mean to give the Holocaust an appropriate place in our political and cultural consciousness?

I admit I was stunned in exploring this question to find no less than 272,000 Google hits for "obsessed with the Holocaust." And it's not just racist sites (including David Duke's) or anti-Zionist sites like Mondoweiss.

Increasingly the word "obsessed"?as "obsessed with the holocaust" or "holocaust obsessed"?has entered contemporary discourse, often used by Jews as an epithet to describe other Jews. It may have entered the mainstream as far back as the publication of Peter Novick's 1999 book The Holocaust in American Life, in which he accuses American Jews as a whole of exploiting the Holocaust in bad faith, either as a "victimization Olympics" or for political (primarily pro-Israel) purposes.

The term "holocaust-obsessed" appeared in The New Yorker in an article about Israeli politician Avraham Burg who, according to David Remnick, "describes the country in its current state as Holocaust obsessed. ..." Too much attention to the extermination of 6 million Jews oh so long ago, just because 6 million or so more are being threatened with exterminationist rhetoric today.

It's lately become a trope of novelists and memoirists who seek to show how much more sophisticated they've become about the whole thing.

And recently the epithet has become a focus of the debate over the Israeli response to Iranian nuclear intentions. It was a prominent "peace activist" there, Uri Avnery who applied the phrase ?holocaust obsessed fantasist? to current Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Demonstrating that it has become a widely recognized shibboleth on both sides of the discourse over American Israeli relations, Jonathan Rosen, in his astute New York Times Book Review critique of Peter Beinart's Crisis in Zion offered a caustic assessment of those self-proclaimed enlightened moralists who accuse others of a "Holocaust-obsessed" mentality.

Future memory: Ferroelectric materials could bring down cost of cloud computing and electronic devices

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A new class of organic materials developed at Northwestern University boasts a very attractive but elusive property: ferroelectricity. The crystalline materials also have a great memory, which could be very useful in computer and cellphone memory applications, including cloud computing.

A team of organic chemists discovered they could create very long crystals with desirable properties using just two small organic molecules that are extremely attracted to each other. The attraction between the two molecules causes them to self assemble into an ordered network -- order that is needed for a material to be ferroelectric.

The starting compounds are simple and inexpensive, making the lightweight materials scalable and very promising for technology applications. In contrast, conventional ferroelectric materials -- special varieties of polymers and ceramics -- are complex and expensive to produce. The Northwestern materials can be made quickly and are very versatile.

In addition to computer memory, the discovery of the Northwestern materials could potentially improve sensing devices, solar energy systems and nanoelectronics. The study was published Aug. 23 by the journal Nature.

"This work will serve as a guide for designing these materials and using ferroelectricity in new ways," said Samuel I. Stupp, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Medicine. He is a senior author of the paper. "Our molecular design enables us to invent a nearly infinite library of ferroelectric materials."

Ferroelectric materials exhibit spontaneous electric polarization (making one side of the material positive and the opposite side negative) that can be reversed by the application of an electric field (from a battery, for example). These two possible orientations make the materials attractive to researchers developing computer memory because one orientation could correspond to a 1 and the other to a 0. (Computer memory stores information in 1's and 0's.)

"The material's behavior is complex, but the superstructure is simple," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. He also is a senior author. "It is the superstructure that gives the material its desirable properties."

The two first authors of the paper are Alok Tayi, a former graduate student in Stupp's lab and now a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, and Alexander Shveyd, a former graduate student in Stoddart's lab and now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester.

These new supramolecular materials derive their properties from the specific interaction, repeated over and over again between two small alternating organic molecules, not from the molecules themselves. The two complementary molecules interact electronically and so strongly that they come close together and form very long crystals. This highly ordered 3-D network is based on hydrogen bonds.

In particular, the materials could help address the very expensive upkeep of cloud computing. Facebook, Google, Web-based email and other services are stored in the cloud and rely on volatile memory. When the power is turned off, volatile memory forgets the information it's holding. So the power has to be kept on.

The new ferroelectric materials could be developed into non-volatile memory. With this type of memory, if the power is turned off, the information is retained. If the cloud and electronic devices operated on non-volatile memory, $6 billion in electricity costs would be saved in the U.S. annually, the researchers said.

Current non-volatile computer memories are not based on ferroelectrics. But ferroelectric memories promise to consume less power, last longer and capture data faster than conventional non-volatile memories.

As so often happens in science, serendipity played a role in this discovery of super long crystals. Shveyd was trying to make boxlike molecular rings, but this outcome was never observed. Instead, he stumbled upon the interesting crystals.

"This discovery effectively opened up a Pandora's box," Stoddart said. "Alex started working with Alok in Stupp's group, and the two of them took advantage of the interactions between the two building blocks. They optimized the design so they could grow very long crystals with ferroelectric properties."

"The interaction between the molecules is very strong -- almost like a key in a lock," Shveyd said. "They fit very well together. This interaction produces ferroelectricity, which, to our great surprise, happened at room temperature."

This type of interaction between two molecules previously had been found to give rise to ferroelectricity in three other materials but only below liquid nitrogen temperatures. The new materials developed at Northwestern include additional interactions that enable this property to occur for the first time at room temperature and above.

The new material is all about electron exchange between two small molecules. One molecule is the donor of electrons (red), and the other is the acceptor of electrons (blue). The red and blue molecules are arranged in a mixed stack, and one type alternates with the other. Within that network, each molecule partners with a neighbor and exchanges electrons. Then an electric field is applied, prompting the molecules to switch partners, like dancers on a dance floor. This switch of partners produces ferroelectricity.

The research team developed a library of 10 complexes with this architecture. Three are reported in the Nature paper. The crystals are based on complexes between a pyromellitic diimide-acceptor and donors that are derivatives of naphthalene, pyrene and tetrathiafulvalene.

"The simplicity of our system demonstrates how self-assembly can endow materials with novel functions," Tayi said. "We hope our work motivates chemists and engineers to explore ferroelectricity in organic materials."
