How to Relax Oneself Through Skiing

Life exerts many pressures on the minds of individuals. They need a way of getting rid of this stress and relaxing. To do this, many individuals take a vacation at one point or another in their lives. A skiing vacation is one great way for individuals to let go of their stresses and live well. One may go to various vacation spots and book him or herself in to enjoy them. The activity helps people relax and exercise their muscles.

It is simple to learn how to ski. Many people learn the basics in a matter of hours after arrival at the resorts offering this sport. It requires slopes with a steep gradient to acquire the momentum one needs to have for this activity. There are different slopes for the different levels of prowess that each person has.

Most places where people can engage in this activity have training facilities with professionals who have a lot of experience in this activity. They equip people with the skills required to engage in this activity safely. They prepare people by telling about the safety precautions necessary for engaging in such sports. They take them up to the slopes designated for learners and amateurs.

The trainers divide the learners into groups and assign each instructor a certain maximum number of students. Those who feel that they need special attention have to pay extra amounts for private sessions with the trainers. Many people however want to get this knowledge and therefore they have to book appointments and meetings with their instructors to get the spot.

Special equipment is necessary for individuals to engage in this sport. These are for guaranteeing the safety and comfort of the skier. The most important is heavy dressing to keep them warm. Ice on which people ski is very cold and the altitude of areas where they go makes conditions colder. Individuals have to possess heavy jackets and jumpers. Gloves and head gear are also important for protective purposes.

The first lesson teaches a learner how to handle the equipment used for these sports. They include sticks and the gliders. One also has to learn how to use the wind and air currents to his or her advantage. These are the ones responsible for keeping one safe and helping to achieve motion at the right speed.

Before going on vacation, one needs to do market research to see the various options of facilities and prices he or she has access to. The market is very competitive and one may opt for a different resort. Budgeting and catering for expenses like accommodation and entry charges is important for maximum enjoyment. One should also ensure that he or she is in good health to survive the harsh conditions of these places.

Other than relaxing and unwinding oneself, there are many other benefits of engaging in these activities. Exercising is very important and recommended by health experts. Skiing is a very useful form of exercise that works on several muscles. The internet would be a good place for people searching for places to go to start their search.

Friday, Oct. 26, 2012: Freedom of religion, free ... - Bangor Daily News

Freedom and religion

A recent letter writer (? Republican Party platform,? BDN, 10/1) chastised Republicans for ?reasserting? the principle that ?freedom of religion? does not mean ?freedom from religion? and delivers a speculative parade of horrors. The writer seeks clarification.

As a professor of constitutional law for 25 years at the University of California, I know something about this subject. ?Freedom from religion? is another way of saying that governments may not aid or acknowledge religion in any way. The logical end of this position is absurd: If a synagogue catches fire, the fire department can?t respond. Less extreme results would include excision of ?So help me God? from the end of the traditional presidential oath of office or denial of tax exemptions to churches.

Freedom of religion means that the people are free to believe as they wish without state compulsion to the contrary and that the state may acknowledge their beliefs by, for example, making Christmas a holiday. Extreme secularists, such as the letter writer and, apparently, the Democratic Party, which begrudgingly admitted the possibility of a God (over the vociferous objections of many of the party?s convention delegates), would require a stern, perhaps Calvinist, rejection of any religious belief in the public square. That?s not what the founding generation had in mind.

A remarkable community

We at Treworgy Family Orchards want to thank our customers on both sides of Question 1 who have treated us with respect after the unfolding of events on our Facebook page (? Treworgy family farmers take down ?No on 1? sign after Facebook flap,? BDN, 10/22). To those who have been less than respectful, we bear no hard feelings.

Our farm?s mission is to be loving and welcoming to all our guests. Some of our guests expressed that they felt unwelcome and hurt by our sign. We decided to remove our ?No on 1? sign because we wanted to demonstrate that we can maintain our convictions, while showing love and respect for those who disagree with us.

Many people have suggested that it was unwise for us to bring our personal convictions into our business. We do not separate our personal lives from our business. Our farm is an extension of who we are, and when we welcome people to our farm we welcome them to our home.

We are grateful to be a part of this remarkable community that values real relationships more than political positions.

It?s only fair

There being too much money in politics and not enough to balance our federal budget may seem like two different problems, but they?re actually related.

Both are a result of immensely wealthy individuals and huge multinational corporations gaining too much power in our society. But there are steps the middle class can take to regain control of our democracy.

Maine, of course, has already gone a long way toward draining ?big money? out of politics with its Clean Elections system. Stellar state Senate candidates such as Geoff Gratwick of Bangor and David White of Bar Harbor, both Democrats, have as a result emerged. Now if Congress would get about overturning the awful Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which opened the door for billionaire kingmakers, we could demand some accountability from the supposedly independent committees that plague our elections with endless attack ads.

By the same token, Congress could get a start on reducing our national debt by asking a little more from those with the most to give. Tax cuts should be allowed to expire on the 2 percent of American households with annual income over a quarter million dollars (while extending middle-income cuts). This would bring in hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade for deficit reduction and strengthen middle-class programs such as Medicare.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe should help forge a bipartisan budget deal now that includes such slightly higher taxes on the rich. Let?s get the money out of politics and do some good for our national finances. It?s only fair.

Safe streets

Once again, Renee Ordway was right on target in her recent column about not feeling safe in certain areas local to Bangor and Brewer ( ?Bangor drug problem makes residents feel like ?hostages? in their own homes,? BDN, 10/6).

Neither do I. I live in Brewer and am in my mid 60s. I no longer walk the streets of our local cities and feel totally safe. She was right about people coming up to you who you don?t know. Some look and act intimidating, like they want to start something. I carry a 9mm pistol most of the time these days, sometimes concealed, sometimes not. I also carry a mace gun. The last thing I want to do is actually have to shoot someone, so I have options. Of course I?ll always try to walk away, but sometimes that is not a safe alternative.

The police do a great job but can?t be everywhere. The average arrival time can be up to six minutes. Sometimes we have to do what we need to do to protect ourselves, loved ones and, yes, even strangers.

Elections have consequences

Two years ago residents of Bangor and Hermon chose Republican Nichi Farnham to represent us in the Maine Senate. Now her first term is drawing to a close. It would be wise to review her work.

Farnham is a likable person and has worked for what she feels is the best interests of her community. Recently in the BDN, Farnham touted some of her accomplishments. Much was left unsaid, however.

Farnham failed to mention that she helped spearhead the attempt to end same-day voter registration. She also failed to mention her support of Maine?s new insurance overhaul bill that has increased rates for older Mainers.

She opposed issues important to women, earning a 33 percent rating from the Maine Women?s Lobby for the second session of the 125th Legislature. She opposed the right of child care workers to collectively bargain, sought to put unnecessary restrictions on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs and supported restrictions on unemployment benefits.

When faced with the choice of supporting her Republican colleagues? budget or standing up for the greater Bangor community, she voted along party lines, even when it meant cutting programs.

Farnham has supported policies that make it harder to live and work in Maine. I urge residents to send Democrat Geoff Gratwick to the Senate to help reverse the harmful policies that have come from the LePage administration and senators such as Farnham.

Letslunch, a New Concept in Networking, Launches in UK | The ...

Our blogger Lachimi Tiwari met with Christopher Pruijsen, Country Manager UK of Letslunch, a networking platform who describe themselves as "the easiest way to network with people that you wouldn't otherwise meet'. Letslunch aims to expand members' networks by connecting them with?industry-relevant entrepreneurs and business professionals for 1:1 lunch meetings. Here's Lachmi's interview with Christopher:

I caught up with Christopher Pruijsen, Country Manager UK of Letslunch ? a new platform which offers us a unique way to network. Letslunch has been successfully operating in the US, Italy and New Zealand since Feb 2012, has over 15,000 users and has helped bring about 12,000 lunches.? 60% of its users in Italy are women and it recently celebrated the 50th lunch of its most active luncher. Letslunch launched last month in th UK.

TNW: Statistics show that female entrepreneurs are lagging behind their male counterparts.? Have you seen a similar pattern in your interactions with up and coming entrepreneurs? ?

CP: In my work with Oxford Entrepreneurs, it was always a huge struggle to get more female entrepreneurs.?

However, what I found is that women are just more cautious than men, they take a bit more time to consider what they want, but when they decide, they really go for it and are very committed.?

Whereas some guys think 'let?s just try it out'.??

TNW: What advice do you have for an aspiring female entrepreneur??

CP: Just try out ? there?s no real risk involved.?Even if you run a business and you fail, if you did everything well, it will look good on your resume because investors will think you?ve learnt something from it.?

Also, be sure to look up other successful female entrepreneurs and ask them any concerns you may have.?

Entrepreneurs embrace a pay it forward philosophy and are more willing to help than corporate counterparts. You need go out there and get all the help you can.?

TNW:?You have a good female user base in Italy, why do you think that?s the case??

CP: I think it?s because of the social nature of our platform. In general, the platform appeals to a lot of women because it allows them to utilise the time they have for lunch and meet new people. Women are more open to that.?

TNW:?So tell me, what can Letslunch do for me??

CP: Letslunch offers you an easy way to expand your network by meeting people you wouldn?t normally meet.? If you are looking for a job or if you are offering jobs, it will also allow you to find a job or find a relevant candidate.? ? ? ?

TNW:?Who pays for the lunch??

CP: Everyone pays for their own lunch.? There are also some sponsored lunches, where for example companies may pay for lunch when they invite a group of relevant people.??

TNW:?Our UK Editor, Maila Reeves is used to people taking her out to lunch.? Does this mean she will have to pay for lunch??

CP: Yes, VIPs will have to pay for their own lunch.?

We asked our VIP user base in the US and Sarah Lacy, former Senior Editor of Techcrunch said would never consider it if she was paid to go lunch.?

We believe this is because it changes the nature of the interaction.? Instead of 2 people meeting and interacting freely as equals, it transforms the interaction into a purchased good.?

TNW:?The UK Launch of Letslunch will be showcasing Version 3.0.? Tell us a bit about what we will see which our counterparts in the US have not seen before.

CP: Version 3.0 will be launched simultaneously in the US.?For starters, we have improved the interface of the platform.?

We have also introduced a group function because there was a demand for it.? You will be able to access group information via LinkedIn and Facebook and will be able to plan for lunches within these groups. ? ?

We also have a new Careers Lunch widget which can be used on recruiters? own websites.? Using this widget, recruiters will see lunch profiles of potential candidates and arrange lunches to help build a relationship with their candidate.?

TNW:?What?s your business model?

CP: We create a match for lunch based on time and location availability of the people.? Letslunch then suggests the restaurant in the area to go to and these restaurants are willing to pay us money if people go there for lunches.?

Another ?new feature is an Ad space which will allow users to feature themselves as lunchers.? People can pay to have their profile displayed throughout the website or to a certain demographic to target the people you want to meet.??

TNW:?Some lunchers may use letslunch as a covert way to date someone, is there anything being done to protect users from that? ?

CP: Yes, our clear message to everyone is that we have a business focus, on networking.?

Secondly, all the users have accessible public profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.? You will be able to see what they are upto.?

Thirdly, if a user tries to have a lunch date, there is a high probability that they will get a bad lunch review.? Once you have a bad review, it will lower your ranking and you will only be matched with people with low rankings.??

However, it works in reverse too.? The only people who can lunch with VIPs can only do so after 3 positive lunch reviews.?

TNW: Letslunch also has a section where you can store a Wishlist of users you would like to have lunch with.? Who would you like to be on your Wishlist? ?

Businesses continue to buy and lease equipment - Finance ...

File photo

U.S. businesses continue to tool up, despite a confusing economic environment.

The Washington, D.C.-based Equipment Leasing and Finance Association?s Monthly Leasing and Finance Index found new business volume was $8.2 billion in September, up 17 percent from September 2011.

Year-to-date cumulative new business volume was up 16 percent.

Meanwhile, the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation, registered its Monthly Confidence Index at 53.3 for October, relatively unchanged from the September index of 53.0.

?While September?s sharp increase in new business volume is indeed encouraging, some equipment finance markets continue to show some softness,? William Sutton, Equipment Leasing and Finance Association president and CEO, said in a news release.

?Also, the run-up to the U.S. elections, high energy prices and continuing uncertainty brought about by fragile European economies is muting what might be an otherwise robust recovery for the U.S. economy,? Sutton said.

The economic situation in the United States looks even more uncertain after a string of disappointing corporate earnings reports.

The Monthly Leasing and Finance Index is available online.

Day Trading Facebook | Anticipating the Biggest Days in Their Brief ...

Investing professionals are salivating at the prospect of day trading Facebook shares in the coming weeks due to the sudden expected increase in float of the issue as several tranches of restricted (or ?lock-up?) shares come on the market. We already have some indicator as to how Facebook shares will perform in the coming days given we have already seen how the first tranche (271 million shares) release impacted share price (read: down 6% August 16th). All told between now and the end of the year 1.2 BILLION additional shares will be unfrozen and freely available for insiders to sell as they wish.

What to Expect from Facebook Shares on Lock-Up Expiration Dates

Given the stock price plummet from IPO levels and insider knowledge about the future revenue prospects (or lack thereof) due to the global migration to mobile web use ? expect the shares to fly out of insider portfolios like rats leaving a sinking ship. We have seen this previously on August 16th 2012, and we here are expecting a repeat of the trading fiasco on October 29th (234 million shares released) and an absolute bloodbath on November 14th (777 million shares unrestricted!). All told, the 1.2 billion shares (156 million December 14th) will become available for sale on the open market. Compare this with the 180 million shares issued in the IPO and you have the makings of a fire-sale that will make the Facebook?s IPO fiasco look like a day at the beach!

How to Capitalize on the Upcoming Turmoil

One thing is certain: Facebook?s share price will be under a tremendous amount of pressure as market-makers will be attempting to manage the deluge of new shares available for trading on the days restricted shares come free. Most market analysts expect to see a dip once the October 29th restricted shares come available. If there is more than a couple percent drop during the trading session it stands to reason that the anticipated bloodbath on November 14th will in fact come to pass. There are five principal ways investors can take advantage of a falling stock price. Whichever method works for a given individual will depends on their level of capital, willingness to take on risk, and desired duration of investment. Ways to take advantage of falling share prices without going short directly (in order of ascending capital requirement and duration) include binary put options, put options, and selling long positions ahead of the release. Other ways to make money day trading on a falling stock price include going short (requires high capital commitment and a margin account) or alternatively selling (writing) call options.

Be Wary of the Risks Involved with Day Trading Stocks

Any of the above strategies involves a significant amount of risk and could result in loss of substantial amounts of capital. Margin trading can involve even greater risk including losses which exceed an investor?s equity capital and should not be considered without careful understanding of the risks involved. This article should not be considered financial advice and does not take into account any particular individual investor?s circumstances including cash-flow needs, capital levels, and appetite for risk, amongst other factors.

Iran sees conspiracy in box office success of Ben Affleck's 'Argo' (+video)

Based on true events surrounding the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, 'Argo' opened this weekend at No. 2 and rose to the top spot on Monday. Iranians are less enthused.

American moviegoers flocked to theaters this weekend to see Ben Affleck's long-anticipated thriller Argo, which has been generating headlines since it was first screened at the Toronto Film Festival last month.?

Based on a true story about how the CIA smuggled six American diplomats out of Iran after the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy, the film opened on Oct. 12 and came in at No. 2 in box office sales over the weekend, after "Taken 2" (an action film starring Liam Neeson). By Oct. 15, Argo held the top spot.?

But inside?Iran, where the decision by a group of Iranian students to storm the US Embassy and hold Americans hostage for 444 days is still controversial and vibrantly debated, the press has paid Argo scant attention. The few comments the film has received are generally negative ? Iran's state-run IRNA news agency called Argo "Hollywood?s latest failed attempt to confront the Islamic Revolution" ? and?replete with complaints that the movie portrays all Iranians as stereotypically aggressive and unrefined and fails to give viewers enough historical context.?(Pirated copies of American films typically become available in Iran a few months before the films open in the US, and are easily accessed by the public.)

?Argo makes the people of Iran look like they have no self-determination, and indisputably support violence,? writes Meysam Karimi in a lengthy review?for the popular Iran-based film magazine website, Moviemag.???For me, as an Iranian ? this makes [the storyline behind] Argo much less believable.?

Iran?s semi-official Fars News Agency?labels Argo ?anti-Iranian" and painted the film as a flop. Citing unidentified "news agencies," it asserted that Argo only?managed to reach second place in the US and Canada because the filmmakers artificially boosted sales by purchasing tickets ?en masse? and giving them away for free to random people. ?

Argo??was unable to become a box office hit in spite of considerable advertisement," Fars wrote.??The filmmakers tried very hard and used a variety of methods to increase ticket sales, but they were unsuccessful. ? Even though ?Taken 2? was in its second week, Argo still couldn?t beat it to first place in the box office ? due to a lack of interest among its own [North American] audience.?

Moviemag, the privately owned online film magazine, is more sober in its assessment of the film, acknowledging Ben Affleck?s strong directorial skill and the film?s attention-grabbing story line and?giving the film a four out of five star rating.

"If I were to set aside issues [with how Iran is portrayed], I must admit that Argo is one of this year?s best movies, and expect it to be awarded an Oscar for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin?s role," he writes.?

?Without a doubt, a non-Iranian viewer will highly enjoy seeing Argo because the story is strong and keeps the viewer?s attention through to the end,? he adds. ?But for an Iranian who counts this subject as part of our country?s history, the view may be a bit different.?

Almost all coverage of Argo also noted that the film?s Toronto Film Festival debut, Sept. 7, is the same day Canada closed its embassy this year in Tehran and announced the expulsion of Iran?s diplomats from Ottawa. ? ?

?Perhaps it was a coincidence,? writes Mr. Karimi for Moviemag. ?But for [the embassy closure] to take place during the Toronto Film Festival, right when this film was being screened, somewhat undermines the theory that this happened by accident.?

Timberlake sings to Biel at wedding

Justin Timberlake dedicated a new song to his new bride Jessica Biel as the couple celebrated its nuptials in Italy.

The couple exchanged vows before family members and close friends at the Borgo Egnazia resort and the reception was one hot ticket event.

The Roots drummer Questlove played DJ at the party and the groom hit the stage to croon a new tune.

One party guest tells Us Weekly magazine, "Questlove played a bunch of Justin Timberlake songs... and Justin performed one song at the wedding - it's a new one that he hasn't released yet. He dedicated it to Jessica."

Giants rout Cardinals 9-0, head to World Series

Score and situation: They may have used the most painful (and wet) route to get there, but the torture-minded San Francisco Giants are headed back to the World Series. A 9-0 romp over the defending champion St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the NLCS on Monday night earned the Giants a Fall Classic date with the Detroit Tigers and ran the team's record in elimination games to 6-0 this postseason. The final out came as rain poured down on AT&T Park and ended in an appropriate fashion as Matt Holliday popped out to Game 2 run-in mate Marco Scutaro.

The Giants are the 11th team in postseason history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in a seven-game series and the first since the 2007 Boston Red Sox came back to beat the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. (St. Louis fans should be familiar with such heartbreak. The 1996, '85 and '68 Cardinals also blew 3-1 leads while going on to lose the series.)

Leading lads: Scutaro capped ?off his series MVP performance with a 3 for 4 night and led a Giants lineup that saw every starter notch at least one hit. Brandon Belt put an exclamation point on the whole affair, launching a moonshot home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning.

[Related: The 2012 World Series schedule is set]

The numbers of Giants starter Matt Cain were not eye-popping, but the righthander did exactly what he needed to do, striking out four and spreading five hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Four relievers ? Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla, Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo ? then took the team the rest of the way home.

(Getty Images)Head hangers: Kyle Lohse answered a lot of questions for the Cardinals this season, but the free agent-to-be bombed in what might be his last start for St. Louis. The 34-year-old righthander gave up five earned run and failed to record an out in the third inning before getting yanked. The six relievers behind him hardly faired any better, though it didn't make a difference with the offense the Cardinals had been sending to the plate. St. Louis was shut out for the second time in three games and managed only one run in its Game 6 defeat.

St. Louis rookie shortstop Pete Kozma had a particularly bad night, breaking the wrong way on a key play, making a bad throw home on another and going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts at the plate.

Key play: Hunter Pence's awkwardly-hit double faked out Kozma and brought home a total of three runs to start the five-run third inning.

Interesting stat: Though the NLCS went seven games, it featured only one lead change and that was when Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third in Game 3. San Francisco outscored St. Louis 27-2 in its four wins while St. Louis outscored San Francisco 17-8 in its three victories.

[Y! Sports Fan Shop: Buy San Francisco Giants championship merchandise]

What they'll be talking about: How do the Giants keep on doing this? They overcame a 2-0 deficit in the NLDS to beat the Cincinnati Reds and have now staged a 3-1 comeback against the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the first Game 7 victory in Giants postseason history. The collapse has to sting for Cardinals fan, though the bitter feelings will eventually be softened with more viewing of that 2011 World Series title DVD and a great organization that produces postseason trips on a frequent basis.

What's next: The Giants will welcome the Detroit Tigers to AT&T Park for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night. It's the second time in three years that the Fall Classic will begin in San Francisco.

The inconspicuous wheels will be ?sunk in? within the body frame like the original design; supposedly, for enhancement of rolling efficiency and airflow. On the other hand, the improved (if we daresay that) styling is quite evident from the roof of this version, which completely incorporates a swanky glass facade (in comparison to the original 70?s model).

Water could flow on Mars, model suggests; Scientists look at melting and evaporation of frozen brines

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? University of Arkansas researchers have created a model that might explain how water could produce the flow patterns seen by a spacecraft orbiting Mars.

Research professor Vincent Chevrier and former Doctoral Academy Fellow Edgard Rivera-Valentin, now a postdoctoral associate at Brown University, published their findings in a recent edition of the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

The University of Arkansas researchers studied small flow features originally identified by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and detailed in a July 2011 paper published in Science magazine. These flow features, which appear and disappear with the seasons and show a strong preference for equator facing slopes, indicate the possible presence of liquid on the Red Planet. Chevrier and Rivera-Valentin have constructed the most comprehensive model to date of the behavior of water-and-salt combinations called brines to show that frozen water could melt, flow and then evaporate, creating these flow features on Mars.

Salts can lower the melting point of water, so the researchers used different forms of salt known to form on Mars to calculate what would melt, how much would become liquid and how long the liquid would last from the time it went from freezing to evaporation. They based their model on soils up to 20 centimeters deep, because beyond that depth the seasonal temperatures would not affect the freezing and melting aspects of the salt-water mixtures.

"We had to find a salt-water mixture that would come and go," in other words, something not completely liquid or solid, said Chevrier, a research assistant professor in the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. They found that calcium chloride fits the bill.

"In one day we could form enough liquid to create these flow features on the surface," he said. The researcher's model also explained why the flow features disappeared by incorporating evaporation into the model.

"The easier it becomes to melt, the easier it becomes to evaporate," Chevrier said. At low concentrations of brine, "as soon as it melts, it evaporates and disappears." However, the researchers showed that they could melt enough brine so that it would not completely evaporate, thus creating conditions that might explain the flow features. Their model fits with the seasonal change in flow observations, with the flows occurring on equator facing slopes and with seasonal changes. Also, high surface evaporation rates as demonstrated in their model explain why, if there is water, it would disappear relatively quickly and why imaging spectrometry on Mars has not identified water signatures.

"No other current model really explains all the observations," Chevrier said.

  1. Ghost Recon Online

So I saw this game on an upcoming list of action shooters. It's in open beta, and I must say it's very impressive. It's not a run and gun shooter. You need use cover, communicate, and push objectives. It's also a free game, and has in-game VOIP system that works flawlessly. Even though it's F2P it's not pay to win, and everything can be unlocked by just playing. I really think it could be a lot fun for TPG gamers, and no one has a spend a dime to play it. Added a few videos so you can see how game works.

Tips of Great Health | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets, Workouts ...

    Athlete?s foot

Sprinkle baking soda on your feet and between your toes, or apply a paste made with one tablespoon of baking soda and lukewarm water. Wait 15 minutes, rinse, and dry your feet thoroughly.

    Black Eyes and Bruises

Firstly, treat the injury for 15 minutes with an ice-pack wrapped in a towel, to constrict the blood vessels. Remove the ice pack for ten minutes to allow your skin to warm up, and then repeat the treatment. Switch to heat the next day to dilate blood vessels and improve circulation (a warm, wet facecloth will work). To get rid of the discoloration, eat a few pawpaws. An enzyme in the fruit makes it easier for the body to re-absorb the blood trapped under your skin.

    Bloodshot Eyes

If your eyes itch, your problem is probably allergies. A cold facecloth held over closed eyes will shrink blood vessels and reduce redness. If you?re eyes don?t itch, the problem is fatigue or a head cold. A warm facecloth will help your eyes relax.

    Blurry computer vision

Tape a piece of newspaper to the wall about two meters from your computer screen. Every 15 to 30 minutes, look at the newspaper and bring the headlines into focus. Then look at your monitor. Do this five times, and then get back to work.

Burn on the roof of your mouth

If you over-nuked your leftover pizza and scorched the roof of your mouth, use an over-the-counter cough lozenge with benzocaine to cut the pain. If you don?t have any try sugar.

    Cold Sores

Hold a wet tea bag on the sore; the tannin from the tea acts as an astringent.

    Shin Splints

Arch your toes back towards your body while gently rubbing your calf. Start behind the knee and slide your hand down the muscle to the heel, then repeat. Rub along the length of the muscle, not across it.

    Frosty finger

Heat up your digits by immersing them in warm water. Avoid rubbing your fingers together; it may damage the skin.

    Hangnails

Use manicure scissors to trim of any sharp, dried skin around the edge of the nail. Then rub petroleum jelly over and around the nail, and leave overnight. The jelly will trap moisture and soften the dry skin underneath.

    Heartburn

Chew a stick of sugar free gum ? the increase saliva will help your stomach acid flow, and it will also coat and protect your esophagus.

    Hoarseness

Your vocal chords need rest, so don?t speak ? or even whisper. To get rid of the frog in your throat, take five to ten minutes shower, drink warm herbal tea with a slice lemon, and avoid caffeine, smoke, alcohol, and large or fatty late-night meals.

    Ingrown Toenails

Soak your foot in war water to soften the nail. Then roll a small piece of cotton to the thickness of a candle wick, soak it with iodine, and place it between the skin and the tip of your nail. Wrap the toe with gauze, tape it, and change the dressing daily until the nail grows out.

    Sunburn

Take an oatmeal bath. Wrap a cupful of oatmeal in sheeting or cheesecloth and hang it from your tap, so that the bath water runs directly over it as the tub is filling. No one knows exactly how the oatmeal works to soothe the pain, but you will feel better.

    Nosebleeds

Sit up, so that gravity will lower the vein pressure inside your nose. Tilt your head forward slightly to keep blood from running down your throat.

    Poison Ivy

If you know you?ve touched the stuff, you have ten to 30 minutes to wash the area and prevent a skin reaction. Soap and water work fine.

    Rashes

Rub a paste of crushed vitamin C tablets and water on your skin.

    Sensitive teeth

To prevent pain, smear a dab of petroleum jelly over your gums before bed.

    Sore feet

Pour a handful of hard, uncooked beans into your slippers and walk around a few minutes. The rolling beans create an instant message. Then hold your feet under the bath tap. Run the water on hot one minute, cold the next. Alternate for ten minutes, ending in a cold rinse. To prevent future pain, sp[read marbles on the floor and pick then up with your toes.

    Sore throat

For mild sore throat, there?s nothing better than gargling with warm salt water. You can try an old Roman trick: blend tomato juice with two cloves of garlic and a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Then drink it down.

    Spicy food

To reduce the burn from a fajita, order a dish of rich ice cream, dip into the sour cream that?s already on the table, or send the waitress for a beer or margarita. Capsaicin, the substance that gives pepper their zing, dissolves readily in alcohol and fat. Rice and bread are also effective.

    Splinters

Soak the area in warm water for up to 15 minutes. This makes the wood swell, which often causes the splinter to pop out on its own. If you want to pluck it with tweezers and you?re having trouble spotting the little nuisance, press a penlight to the sore spot. Light will pass through the skin and highlight the splinter?s angle and depth. If that doesn?t help, pour a thin layer of white glue over your finger. Let it dry, and then peel it of. The splinter will usually come off with the glue.

This is the Verizon HTC DLX

    HTC Verizon

Verizon appears poised to bring HTC's first 5-inch Android smartphone to the U.S.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the HTC DLX for Verizon. A few rumored details recently emerged about this upcoming (and as yet unannounced Android smartphone, and tonight we're able to bring you the first pictures.

The HTC DLX (pronounced like "deluxe," we're told) is notable for several reasons. For one, it will (assuming it comes to market; that's not always a given) be Verizon's first HTC One smartphone since the line was announced at Mobile World Congress way back in February in Barcelona. That the United States' largest carrier didn't pick up any of the three devices announced then has been a sore spot for months.

Then there's the size. Along with the Japan-exclusive HTC J Butterfly, the HTC DLX marks the manufacturer's first foray into the 5-inch display category, known to some as "ridiculously large." But consider our curiosity piqued, our appetite whetted. We -- and you folks as well, we know - have been waiting on Verizon to sport new HTC kit for the better part of a year now.

Enough preamble. We've got more pictures, specs and a few thoughts after the break.

Edwards Lifesciences' heart valve wins widened approval

(Reuters) - Edwards Lifesciences Corp said U.S. health regulators widened the approved use of its Sapien artificial heart valve to include patients who are eligible for surgery but at high risk of serious surgical complications or death.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also approved delivering the heart valve by catheter transapically, or through the ribs.

The Sapien valve was approved last November only for patients deemed too sick to have heart valve replacement using more traditional open-heart surgery, and only for delivery through the femoral artery -- located in the leg.

The widened approved population and the second delivery approach could give a needed commercial boost to Sapien, whose sales have disappointed Wall Street investors.

"The indication expands the patient population to both younger, less-risky patients, as well as patients who have inadequate femoral access (common in female patients)," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Glenn Novarro.

Novarro said he believed rib access could be used relatively soon in about half of all Sapien procedures, at least until a new generation of Sapien, called "Sapien XT" is approved, likely in 2014.

The FDA widened approval to patients deemed eligible for surgery largely because of a clinical trial that showed death rates were similar among patients who received Sapien through its minimally invasive catheter and similar patients with aortic valve stenosis who received valve replacements through open-heart surgery.

But patients who received the Sapien transcatheter valve showed an increased risk for major vascular complications or stroke during the first month after the procedure.

Patients with aortic valve stenosis have heart valves that are partially clogged by calcium deposits, reducing blood flow and often leading to heart failure or cardiac arrest. Those with severe stenosis must have a heart valve replacement to restore normal blood flow.

Shares of Edwards Lifesciences closed down 0.7 percent at $86.14 on Friday amid a sharp downturn for the broad stock market.

Value of combined approach to quitting smoking confirmed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? Smokers who try to quit would be more successful if they combined medication or nicotine-replacement therapy with behavioral counseling, finds a new review in The Cochrane Library. Few lifestyle changes deliver as many positive health benefits as quitting smoking, including improved circulation, lowered blood pressure and a decreased risk of cancer and heart disease.

"Since we know that both types of treatment are effective, the assumption has certainly been that offering both will be better than offering either alone," said lead researcher Lindsay Stead of the department of primary health care sciences at the University of Oxford. She and her coauthor sought to confirm this observation by measuring the effects of combining behavioral and medication therapy versus no intervention or medication therapy alone. The reviewers pooled findings from 41 studies involving more than 20,000 smokers.

The review found that providing a combination of medication and behavioral therapy improved quit rates by as much as 70 to 100 percent compared to no treatment or minimal intervention. Behavioral therapy interventions typically included four to eight sessions with smoking cessation counselors or physicians. "Health care providers have an important role in convincing smokers of the importance of attempting to quit and making pharmacotherapy and behavioral support available," the researchers stated.

"Usual care in most health care systems for smoking cessation typically consists of brief pre-quit counseling, a recommendation to use, and possible provision of cessation medication, and a follow-up visit or phone call a few weeks later," said Stevens S. Smith, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of medicine at the University of Wisconsin's Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention.

"For patients motivated to make a quit attempt, counseling and assistance with medications -- if medically appropriate -- should be provided," said Smith. "For patients not motivated to quit, the doctor should use motivational interventions. Another option is referral to tobacco quit lines, such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW, where smokers can receive free medication, counseling, and other support to quit smoking."

Now that my big 4-0 birthday is just around the corner, I know I need to take better care of myself, so I?ve been looking for new ways to make sure I get the extra nutrition that I might be missing in my daily diet and not able swallow taking as a pill. So it was great timing I was recently offered the opportunity to review Activate ? a new zero calorie beverage that offers vitamins and great taste.

    ?

    ?

Using research that proved many vitamins lose their potency when they sit in water on store shelves, Activate has a cool custom cap that allows you to add a fresh dose of vitamins to refreshing flavored waters with just a twist of the cap. With 0 grams of sugar, 0 calories, no preservatives, and naturally sweetened with Stevia, Activate is an easy and quick way to get extra nutrients daily, without blowing your diet.

    ?

Activate filters the impurities out of regular water with a deionization filtering process, adds in great flavor, and then safely stores vitamins in the cap that you add when you?re ready to drink with just a twist. They?ve got a great variety of flavors including Exotic Berry Activate and Blueberry Pomegranate Activate.

    ?

In addition to being a different and tasty drink on the go, Activate also makes a great low calorie cocktail mixer. This time of year as everyone is having Halloween and holiday gatherings, I don?t always indulge in holiday cheer with everyone else because the cocktails being served are high calorie. It can be tough on a diet to find fun low calorie cocktails, but Activate has some tasty mixtures you?ll want to try out.
