Washington County jury unable to reach verdict in scalded-child case

Danielle Lynn Connor, 24, of Dewey was charged in January in connection with injuries suffered by her then 16-month-old child.

The eight-woman, four-man jury deliberated for several hours Wednesday before declaring that its members were hopelessly deadlocked.

Connor, whose name is spelled Conner in some court records, had left the child in a bathtub filled with warm water under the care of a 3-year-old and went to tend to laundry in another room. When she returned to the bathroom, she found the hot water on and the younger child screaming. As she lifted the child from the water, skin fell off the child's legs, according to police.

Connor's attorney Mark Kane stressed that the injuries were accidental. Prosecutors said Connor should be held accountable for leaving the child alone.

Physicians testified during the trial that the child showed no signs of abuse or disease.

Kane told the jury that police noted childproof locks on cabinet doors in the home, a childproof room gate and a baby tub seat in the bathtub.

The child was treated for second- and third-degree burns.

District Judge Curtis Delapp ordered Connor returned to the Washington County Jail and set a Sept. 19 return court date. Connor has remained in jail with bail set at $50,000 bond since her arrest seven months ago.

Prosecutors will decide whether to try the case again.

Microsoft links Windows 8 apps to Azure

Microsoft is adding mobile connectivity between Windows applications and the Windows Azure cloud platform with the introduction this week of Windows Azure Mobile Services.

The technology will enable users to connect client and mobile applications based on Windows 8 to a scalable cloud back end, said Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president in the Microsoft Server and Tools Business, in a blog post. "It allows you to easily store structured data in the cloud that can span both devices and users, integrate it with user authentication, and send out updates to clients via push notifications." Windows 8 is due to ship on October 26.

[ Elsewhere in the cloud space, Zend and VMware are partnering to get PHP applications deployed to clouds. | Also, download Cloud Computing in 2012: An InfoWorld Special Report. ]

Plans call for Windows Azure Mobile Services to soon add support for Windows Phone, Apple iOS, and Google Android devices. Users can get started by signing up for a 90-day free trial of Windows Azure, whereupon they enable their account to support the Mobile Services preview.

"Once you have the mobile services preview enabled, log into the Windows Azure Portal, click the 'New' button, and choose the new 'Mobile Services' icon to create your first mobile back end," Guthrie said. Once the back end is created, users will see a quick-start page with instructions on connecting the mobile service to an existing or new Windows 8 client application. Azure users can as many as 10 mobile services in a free, multitenant hosting environment.

"When you create a Windows Azure Mobile Service, we automatically associate it with a SQL database inside Windows Azure. The Windows Azure Mobile Service backend then provides built-in support for enabling remote apps to securely store and retrieve data from it (using secure REST end-points utilizing a JSON-based ODATA format) -- without you having to write or deploy any custom server code. Built-in management support is provided within the Windows Azure portal for creating new tables, browsing data, setting indexes, and controlling access permissions," Guthrie said.

Hantavirus in Yosemite: Why It Surfaced, and How We Can Stop It

Seeing the news of a hantavirus outbreak in Yosemite, I was immediately transported back to work I did nearly 20 years ago, when a ?mystery illness? killed three out of four of its victims in the Four Corners region of the United States in May 1993.

I was a member of the Arizona team of the hantavirus investigation group that included public health experts from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Back then the headlines did not include the name of the pathogen. It took us weeks to determine the cause: a new hantavirus we eventually called Sin Nombre Virus?that which has no name.

Now, knowing hantavirus is the cause of the illness that has so far killed two people allows for quick action, including outreach to those potentially exposed. That?s what the Yosemite folks, assisted by health professionals and public health authorities, are doing.

MORE: Study Uncovers Alarming Worldwide Rates of Drug-Resistant TB

The current list of preventive measures for hantavirus is nearly identical to the list we created 20 years ago. Hantavirus risk reduction still depends on avoiding contact with rodents or their urine and feces (where the disease is carried), and includes simple actions to reduce that likelihood. So while some things have not changed, the ability to rapidly communicate to people who have been exposed has certainly improved in 20 years.

If this particular campground in Yosemite bears out as a common point of exposure (as suggested in the early reports), then this will be a great stroke of luck, uncovering the outbreak?s origin when the total known cases can be counted on one hand.

Acting on this possible link early in the investigation will, at a minimum, inform a few thousand people who can be vigilant for symptoms, and, ideally, prevent others from future exposure through improved practices and awareness at the campground.

MORE: West Nile Virus and Other Diseases May Have an Unexpected Accomplice: Climate Change

A bigger challenge is getting the word out to healthcare providers who may be seeing single cases of disease elsewhere in the United States or in other countries where travelers to this campground may have returned.

For epidemiologists, a cluster of illness or common exposure to a known pathogen is of much higher concern when the disease is able to spread from human to human. Thankfully, hantavirus has never spread from human to human, so this gives a little breathing room in tracking down those who might have been exposed. Since we know the source of hantavirus is the deer mouse, a cluster of illness from a common source like what we?re likely seeing in Yosemite begs the questions: why there and why now?

In 1993, months of substantial rainfall in the Southwestern part of the United States led to increased local vegetation that produced pinion nuts?a food source for the local mice. Increased mice meant more mice droppings that filled cabins closed for the winter, empty seasonal camp grounds, and houseboats left in storage.

Normal activities like sweeping out a cabin may have aerosolized the invisible microbes from the mice urine and feces on the floor and led to human illness and death. Epidemiologists will no doubt be looking at similar factors to try to understand the Yosemite outbreak.

Zoonotic diseases are those spread from animals to humans. Hantavirus, though rare, is just one of many infections that can be transmitted from rodents. Another zoonitic disease, West Nile virus, is currently in the headlines as well. Introduced to the United States in 1999 (many speculate it came via mosquitoes in stagnant water in wheel wells of aircraft or as a ?passenger? inside the cabin), it is now endemic throughout the country. We can expect periodic disease outbreaks when vectors like mosquitoes are part of our ecosystem?just like the mice that carry hantavirus.

Insects, rodents, bats, birds, and animals in general each carry disease risks. Sometimes these manifest in ways that give us warning. We can get signals like bird deaths from West Nile virus, or bird flu in chickens and ducks that can be a warning to humans. But often a microbe lives silently and benignly within another creature, like hantavirus in mice, and we only learn of its presence when we see outbreaks in humans, like the one in Yosemite.

Visitors to rural areas, national parks, and wildlife preserves should understand that contact with any wildlife carries some risk. In many cases, including hantavirus, risks can be reduced, as long as we?re aware there?s a threat. Keep informed, protect yourself and others by following the recommendations of public health and medical experts, and remember that we are all connected together from a health perspective?human, animals, and the complex ecosystem of our planet.

Google and Apple execs are reportedly talking. Is a truce at hand?

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google chief Larry Page conducted at least one 'behind-the-scenes conversation' last week, shortly before a California jury issued a verdict in a major copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Apple.?

Last week, a California jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple over $1 billion ? penance for violating a number of key smartphone and tablet patents. That much we knew. Here's what we didn't know: According to Reuters, shortly before the verdict was announced, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google chief Larry Page conducted at least one "behind-the-scenes conversation," in an effort to keep open "the lines of communication" between the two tech titans.?

Charles Cooper and Roger Cheng of CNET have since confirmed that the talks took place.

The whole thing is big deal for a couple reasons. For one, Apple and Google are known rivals; high-level talks like this are rare. For another, those Samsung devices named in the Apple lawsuit all ran versions of Google's Android operating system. Although Google has sought to "keep the matter at arm's length," as The Verge put it, it's clear that the verdict will directly affect Google.?

"[Y]ou don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind's blowing," write Cooper and Cheng. "After its?one-sided court victory?last week over Samsung in a landmark copy infringement lawsuit, Apple has added incentive to press its legal claims against other computer makers who use Google's?Android?operating system...?Given the lopsided nature of Samsung's legal defeat, Google may believe the prospects of an Apple lawsuit are higher than they were just a week ago."

So what exactly would Cook and Page be talking about? Well, a truce, maybe. From the Reuters report:?

One possible scenario under consideration could be a truce involving disputes over basic features and functions in Google?s Android mobile software, one source said. But it?s unclear whether Page and Cook are discussing a broad settlement of the various disputes between the two companies ? most of which involve the burgeoning mobile computing area ? or are focused on a more limited set of issues.

How Many Grains of Sand Are on Earth's Beaches?

The Math Dude: Quick & Dirty Tips to Make Math Simpler

Scientific American presents Math Dude by Quick & Dirty Tips. Scientific American and Quick & Dirty Tips are both Macmillan companies.

Today we?re going to learn how math makes it easy to estimate things that seem practically impossible to calculate. In particular, since summer is in full swing, we?re going to take math to the beach and think about the age-old question: How many grains of sand are on all of Earth?s beaches? As long time Math Dude fans may recall, we first learned about using math to make estimates when we watched Secret Agent Math daringly calculate how many breaths of air there are in a sealed room. So why are we revisiting this topic? Because learning to combine your brain with math to make estimates is an absolutely invaluable skill?and it?s a skill that?s only developed with practice. Which is exactly what we?re going to do today.

Step 1: Make a Plan Sometimes it?s fun to jump right in and do something without really knowing what you?re doing. And while that kind of spontaneity is great for things like claymation and spur-of-the-moment weekend trips, it?s a really bad idea for tackling math problems. As such, the first thing we need to do today is make a plan for figuring out how many grains of sand there are on Earth?s beaches. I know this might sound like a nearly impossible task, but rest assured that overcoming these seemingly long odds?and the sense of dread they instill in the hearts of otherwise brave souls?is precisely what our plan will do.

The best way to tackle a tough problem like this is to break it down into easier parts. In our case, if we can estimate how many grains of sand there are in a typical volume of beach (say the number of grains per cubic meter), and then estimate what the volume of sand is on all the beaches of the world (say in cubic meters), then all we have to do to find the total number of grains of sand is multiply these two numbers together. Easy, right? Well, okay?perhaps this still isn?t exactly easy. But let?s continue marching bravely forward to see if we can tackle each of these sub-problems on their own, and then to see if this divide-and-conquer approach can help make the seemingly impossible possible.

Personal Growth ? Be Your Best Self | Bemads Blog

    Personal Growth Means Change

I recently mourned the death of one of my dear friends. As I listened to the wonderful comments made by so many as to the kind of person he was, I stopped for a moment to look inside myself to see who I am. There was enormous room for growth in my life. Is there room for improvement in your life? Let us take a moment to learn how we can grow to become the person we hope to be.

We all want to be the best that we can be. We sometimes see others and admire certain characteristic traits about them. We have read volumes of self-help books in hopes of fine tuning ourselves. True many of these books help but self-growth goes way beyond reading books. It means we must stop wishing for change and becomes proactive in creating the change. Self-growth is about change and the change begins with us.

In order for change to take place within you, you must first define your objectives. Know what changes you want to make. You are aware of the qualities you want to discard from your life. Write them down. Here are some ways to begin to do some introspective work to help you to define the changes you want to make in your life.

Make a list of some habits you?ve often wanted to change. Do you know how you are perceived? Try to get a feel of how others think of you. Make a note of how you want to be perceived and how to can change your behavior to achieve that. Make mental notes of how you treat others. Do you walk away feeling good that you have treated that person you encountered fairly. Do you feel good when you walk away? Think back to criticisms you have received in the past. Do you think there may have been some truth to them? Are you objective enough to see the true you? Speak to an objective friend or family member you trust to be fair and honest with you. Get some feedback on how you are perceived. Observe the behaviors of those you admire and make a note. Do you see those same characteristics in you? Make a note of behaviors you see in others that you dislike and look within to see if you share any of those traits. Try to be objective. Make a list of the ones you want to change.

    Personal Growth Means Introspection

True we have to love and accept ourselves unconditionally but we must always strive to be the best that we can be. That is how we grow. Self-acceptance should in no way interfere with your ability to be your best. As a matter of fact it should have the reverse effect. It should allow you to know the real you and to have an awareness of where you need to make changes. This awareness will determine how serious you are in growing beyond your current limits. Keep in mind that personal growth can be measured in physical, mental, psychological, spiritual, and emotional amplitude.

Take a moment right now to evaluate your life. Look inside to examine the areas where you would like to improve on.

Define your character. Who are you when no one is looking? remove all the window dressings, frills, and accessories, who are you? How is your health? Are you doing everything possible to take care of your body? Do you eat the right foods and participate in a regular exercise routine? How would your friends, coworkers, people who come in contact describe you? What would people say about you if they had to write your eulogy? How is your mind? Are you emotionally strong? Is your self-confidence and self-esteem at an all time high? If not would you like to find emotional balance? How is your spiritual health? Do you feed your spiritual need? How is your soul?s condition? How do you treat others? Are you kind or are you condescending to people? Do you give of your time to help others that are less fortunate or has self-centeredness consumed you? How is your ego? Is it intact? Are you humble or are you into flaunting it or showing off? Are you a good parent? Do your yell at your kids? Do you put in the time with them to raise emotionally balanced children? Do you help to build strong self-esteem so they can have elevated levels of self-acceptance?

As you look inside it is important to understand that there is no single recipe that defines how each person can grow personally. It is not a single formula for each of us. It is through fervent introspection and an acceptance for change that it can begin. Even though it may be slow and difficult at first, you must have the willingness to keep at it no matter if it takes a lifetime. Remember you are not trying to achieve perfection ? you are only striving to achieve your personal best.

    Personal Growth means Humility

In order for one to grow, one must be humble enough to recognize and accept the areas where improvement is needed. This sense of humility will create honest introspection that can make us more aware of the characteristics and behaviors we need to improve on. This kind of humility puts ego aside, creating an open-mindedness to accept constructive criticism. When we can humble ourselves this way then tremendous personal growth can begin to take place in our lives.

With a spirit of humility you can:

Lose self-centeredness Better understand yourself and why you do the things you do Better understand your behavior and accept the need for change Recognize your mistakes and accept responsibility for your actions. Recognize the goodness in you Become more understanding of others Be more forgiving

Humility is the beginning of knowledge. It is the start of that mindset to gain more wisdom and improve self. The know-it-all attitude is laid to rest, enabling honest introspection, which promotes growth.

    Achieve Personal Growth

Once you have humbled yourself, done the honest self-reflection, and gained the awareness, identify the areas in which you need to improve. You must believe that you can achieve the personal growth you want and let go of self-doubt.

Make a list of the things you desire to personally achieve. Prioritize the list and select the most urgent issue. Learn everything there is to know about it, whether it is losing weight, letting go of anger, or improving your spiritual life. The more information you have, the more motivation and determination you will develop. As you become more educated in your subject matter, decide if you can implement these changes alone or if you need the assistance of a professional or expert in the field to help you. Getting help is positive step toward achieving personal growth so don?t feel inadequate if you need help. It is only we feel we don?t need help that growth ceases. Develop a plan for achieving your goal. It must be clearly organized starting from a long-term goal to daily tasks that move you closer each day toward your goal. So if it?s in the area of physical health, make a plan for doing so. When discomforts arise, don?t give up. Everyday is not going to be perfect. You are not going to wake up each morning enthusiastic about your plans for that day. When you do, don?t be too hard on yourself. It is during these times that a coach or a professional can assist you in staying on target. They can help you to refocus on your plan and exercise the discipline to stick with it. Daily positive affirmations and self-talk are necessary to maintain the motivation to grow. This is not narcissism or egotistical. This is only you giving yourself reminders of your positive attributes. Have faith to believe that you will succeed. In anything we set out to do in life it takes a certain level of faith to keep going everyday. Sometimes we cannot see the instant rewards but with persistence and faith to believe things will work out, you can find the strength to stay the course.

It is an admirable quality to be able to identify the areas you need to make changes in your life and even more commendable to take the steps forward to do so. Personal Growth is a catalyst for success in every aspect of your life. Many of you are making strides each day in your personal growth. For those of you who are, keep at it and savor each stage of your growth. For those of you recognizing the need for personal growth, hats off to you. Begin the journey today.

Civic Club of Harrisburg looks to reboot for modern times | PennLive ...

In its prime, the Tudor home on Front Street was a hub for the who?s-who of Harrisburg. The hallways and gardens would fill with the wives of influential Harrisburgers, gathered for tea and discussions regarding the issues of the day.

Named the Civic Club of Harrisburg, the ladies? impact on the city was deep and wide as they lobbied for social concerns.

Members of the women-only club paid for Harrisburg?s first free kindergarten, were instrumental in the establishment of a garbage collection system for the city and became champions of the ?City Beautiful? movement in the early 1900s.

The club took on environmental issues that affected residents? health, advocating for clean air and water and at one time, placed a bounty on flies. In 1914, members paid 5 cents per pint of flies, collecting more than 500.

Today the home, with its carefully tended garden and beautiful ballroom, is better known as ?the wedding place on Front Street.? A venue for brides and grooms to dance the night away above the banks of the wide Susquehanna River where Front and North streets meet.

Like many century-old organizations, the club has been challenged to adopt to the modern world. At its peak, club membership included more than 700 women.

    Times have changed.

As more and more women entered the workplace ? and more things competed for people?s attention ? club membership began to fall off.

Now, more than 114 years after it began working in the city, the club is rebooting.

Members spent the better part of a year working on a strategic plan for the club, aimed at figuring out its future.

A few weeks ago, in the ballroom on the second floor of the mansion, the heads of several nonprofit organizations were sipping coffee and munching on breakfast. They talked about what their organizations are doing in the Harrisburg region and their plans for the rest of the year.

Habitat for Humanity is close to opening three new homes, they heard. Dress for Success is planning to start a mobile store for women in need of professional clothing. The arts program Barak is planning to launch an arts festival for young people.

The nonprofit breakfast get-together is one of the new initiatives being hosted by the Civic Club. President Beth Cornell is hoping it will become a way for the agencies to not only network, but identify community issues to tackle together.

Business have the Chamber of Commerce, Cornell said, ?but what about non-profits??

?Where do they meet, where do they talk?? she asked. ?We want to be outside facilitators.?

Hence the roundtable discussion a few weeks ago.

Other subtle changes are also taking place in the club. The old house is now wired ? both figuratively and literally, with a website and Internet access. There?s a new motto and logo.

But one of the most interesting initiatives is that the club has started broadcasting.

Each month the ladies host a speaker on a topic relevant to the community.

One month may be a speaker discussing Chesapeake Bay conservation and its impact on communities along the Susquehanna. Or a seminar on senior citizen crime prevention.

In the past, members and visitors would have to physically be present to hear the discussions. But this year the club piloted a program where they began broadcasting the sessions to the nearby Homeland Center.

They?re pursing a grant to allow them to continue to do so, and are working with other organizations in the area to increase their audience.

Then there is the building itself. Upkeep of the historic structure is expensive, but necessary. The club sees itself as a public space ? how can they capitalize on that?

Club officers are talking with the League of Women Voters to host political debates in the fall. Nonprofits can use the historic home for events.

?We?re still doing weddings, we?re still doing events, but we want to expand a little bit beyond that,? Cornell said.

This summer the club is holding a membership drive for women in the local community. More members means more hands to work on projects in the community.

?We have to think about our society today,? Cornell said. ?This place used to be where women would to find out what the issues are. What then is the role of our club? That?s what we want to tackle.

?I didn?t really want us to be known as ?the wedding club,?? Cornell said. ?I want us to be known as ?the Civic Club.??

Did the Chareidi Mom Try Drowning her 9-Year-Old Daughter?

    (Monday, August 27th, 2012)

Police questioned a chareidi mom who arrived at the Metzitzim Beach in Tel Aviv. According to others on the beach, who observed the mother?s actions, it appeared she was trying to drown her 9-year-old daughter.

Kim Kardashian Asks: Does My Butt Look Fat?

It's the question all boyfriends and husband dread: Does this make my butt look big?

And it's the same one Kim Kardashian has now decided to ask of her millions of Twitter followers.

The reality star took a break over the weekend from sending out photos of her wild hair and bikini body, instead focusing on her most famous body part and Tweeting the following photo/caption:

Ummm in a fitting w @MonicaRoseStyle I think my butt looks too big in these jeans.

    Kim Kardashian Butt

Cue the sympathy of countless Kardashian acolytes, who all wrote in to assure Kim that no, of course that isn't true... she's gorgeous and perfect... and they all just wish they could be like her.

    Pardon us while we vomit.

But if Kim is asking, here's your chance to answer: Do these jeans make her butt look fat?

The Expendables 2 Explodes Again, Anti-Obama Documentary Soars

The Expendables 2 once again took a machine gun to its box office competitors this weekend, taking in the most money for a second consecutive Friday and Saturday, this time by about $4 million over The Bourne Legacy.

But it was a mostly quiet weekend in Hollywood, with few new films opening and Sylvester Stallone's sequel winning the weekend with a haul of just $13.9 million.

The major movie news instead centered around 2016: Obama’s America, a conservative documentary that cracked the top 10 overall, earning $6.2 million and enjoying an impressive per-theater average of over $5,700.

The flick has now grossed $9.2 million. It ranks first all-time among conservative documentaries.

Look for it to continue to excel in the face of this week's Republican National Convention - but still has space miles to go in order to match  Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11, which took in $119.2 million in 2004.

Here is a look at the top 10:

    1. The Expendables 2 – $13.5 million
    2. The Bourne Legacy – $9.3 million
    3. ParaNorman – $8.6 million
    4. The Campaign – $7.4 million
    5. The Dark Knight Rises – $7.2 million
    6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green – $7.1 million
    7. Premium Rush – $6.3 million
    8. 2016: Obama’s America – $6.2 million
    9. Hope Springs – $6.0 million
    10. Hit and Run – $4.7 million

The Value of FREE in Internet Business | JAST BUSINESS

Do You Get What You Pay For?

I have heard the saying ?You get what you pay for,? but I don?t think that theory applies to Internet Marketing. Yes, there is tons of free advertising available on the net and there are millions of people using free advertising to promote their businesses, but is it effective? I think when you try to judge the effectiveness of Free Online Advertising, you have to take into consideration all that you can get for free.

    Placing Free Ads

    - For one thing, placing free ads will help you learn whether or not marketing online is for you at all; if you hate promoting your offer and placing ads, find other work.

    - Placing free ads can teach you about writing ad copy; if you can?t write copy that gets someone?s attention on a free site, you definitely should not pay for ads.

    - Free advertising also teaches you to read the terms of service before you sign up for a service; most of us have unknowingly agreed to receive mail from thousands of FFA network members everyday as a result of posting a free ad.

    Free Resources

You can, in fact, get a crash course in a whole new career with very little out of pocket expenses. The key here is using every free resource available to you and paying very close attention to your results.

    - You will need web site statistics, this is your best way to know if your ad is effective. If you don?t get statistics with your free web site, you can still get free statistics- by following simple instructions to insert a bit of code onto your site.

    - Ad tracking statistics are another great free value, especially if you have an affiliate site that does not offer web site statistics. You can use these to test different ads at the same location, different types of ads (like a banner versus an email ad), as well as the same ad at several locations. They can even provide different URL?s to help you place your ad more than once on an ad site that only lets you post your URL once.

    - Use all of the free advertising tools available to you. Most people do not realize that there is more to free ads than FFA links and Classified ads. Today it is possible to use banner advertising, email advertising and viral marketing totally free. Always start with free before you invest in paid advertising.

    Begin With What You Have

It is possible to begin to build a business on the Internet with no or very low investment. There are many free tools and resources available on the Internet, the hard part is taking the time to find and evaluate them. Don?t even think about spending a lot of your hard earned money until after you have learned to get some visitors to your site. Until then, do and learn as much as you can for FREE!

Figure skating dresses aren't just for skinnies! | Graphomaniac - Blog

I spend most Saturday mornings skating, either with or without a lesson.? Today I worked on my Adult Bronze Freestyle program, set to music from Final Fantasy X.? I?m still wondering what I?m going to wear when I finally test it.

Elite athletes spend big bucks for the right costumes, some put together especially for them by top designers.? Kids? outfits are often made by their moms, or purchased plain and then embellished by same.? Adults are mostly on their own.

We can?t ALL wear Vera Wang.

    Image:? stylecheckup.com

Most skaters never reach Nancy Kerrigan level.? Good quality skating dresses can cost over a hundred bucks for something simple.? And manufacturers of ready-made outfits don?t seem to realize that most adult skaters aren?t five-foot stick figures.

I?m an adult recreational figure skater, and while I?m not obese, I ain?t skinny either.? I can?t afford to buy dresses or have them made for me, so I bought a sewing machine and learned to make my own.

I use Kwik Sew patterns, which are interchangeable.? If the skirt is too short on one, I can substitute something else.? I?m also tall, so I had to lengthen the bodice and sleeve patterns.? The instructions are easy, and the patterns simple.

I have two ready-made dresses, and I only wore one of them once.? It?s a lovely purple dress with spaghetti straps .? Let?s get one thing straight.? I?m a woman, and I have boobs.? The only way I felt comfortable in the thing was to wear a nude leotard under it.

Mostly, I try to stay away from:

    Excess crystals

I don?t have the body for these (yet?I?m working on it).? No need to accentuate bumps I don?t want anyone to notice.? Besides, the good ones are pricey.? I don?t want to waste them on a homemade crap costume.

    Circular skirts

They flare out nicely, but unless they are a bit longer than usual, they make my hips look bigger.? Flat skirts actually are better for a fuller figure.

    Poofy sleeves

If you have sticklike arms, go for it.? Or, preferably, if you?re under ten years old.

Cute if you?re six; not so much if you?re sixty.

    Image: ?northernice&dance.com

    Tiny anything

Ever notice what happens when a lady in a figure skating dress skates backward really fast?? The underpants on that dress need to cover your butt completely.

    Bare outfits

The purple spaghetti strap dress I mentioned earlier is covered with sparkles and is flowy and beautiful.? I can?t bear to get rid of it.? It?s like a faint, closeted hope that I may someday be able to go bra-less.? But without something underneath, one jump and Janet Jackson will be on her knees thanking God she?s not me.

    Thin fabrics

It?s cold in there, dammit.? Not only do thin fabrics show things I wish they wouldn?t, they?re not warm enough.? I favor stretch velvet, not too shiny.? Sometimes it?s still not enough, so I use a stretch lining fabric or that extra leotard.

An extra layer also helps conceal any supportive garments.? Technically, you?re not supposed to wear anything under a skating dress, but I?d rather not distract the audience with flying body parts.

Here?s an example of a gorgeous costume on a mature skater.? This is Dr. Marci Richards, competing at the Adult National Figure Skating Championships.

    You go girl!

    Image:? figureskatingabout.com

Skating costumes reflect the character of the music.? They?re not as literal as stage costumes, unless you?re in Disney on Ice.? ?Like the words you choose when you?re writing, your colors and embellishments help set the tone for your program.

For adult skaters, it?s certainly possible to look as great as you skate!

New prostate cancer study clouds PSA debate (Yahoo)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study suggests men with advanced prostate cancer may live longer in the "PSA era" than they did before the screening test began to gain a foothold in the early 1990s. The findings - which a leading cancer expert said were problematic - stoke the heated debate over prostate cancer screening using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Many researchers now fear routine testing may lead to aggressive treatments that do more harm than good. ...
