NCAA MEN: Memphis Tigers win close road game

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Memphis got a close 62-59 win over Alabama-Birmingham at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday.

The game came four days after Gene Bartow, who is a cornerstone figure in both programs' histories, passed away after suffering from stomach cancer.

Will Barton led the way for the Tigers with 16 points, and Adonis Thomas was right behind him with 15.

Chris Crawford finished with 10 points.

The win is the Tigers' 10th of the season as they're now at 10-5 and 1-0 in Conference USA play.

Patric Hornqvist scored two power-play goals to lead the Nashville Predators to a 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

Shea Weber, Craig Smith and Ryan Ellis also scored as Nashville won for the fourth time in five games.

Jay Harrison scored twice for Carolina, which is 1-2-1 in its last four.

Hornqvist's second goal of the game and 11th of the season gave the Predators a 4-0 lead nearly 7 minutes into the third period.

Harrison got the Hurricanes on the board with his fourth of the season at 8:35.

Ellis extended the margin back to four with his first NHL goal, on the power play with 5:32 remaining.

Weber opened the scoring at 9:14 of the first period after taking a pass from Martin Erat as he crossed the blue line and converting a slap shot from the point past Carolina goaltender Justin Peters to his glove side.

Smith made it 2-0 with 6:44 to go in the first on a one-time on the power play.

Hornqvist, stationed in front of the net, tipped in a shot by Mike Fisher for a power-play goal with 2:56 left in the second period to give the Predators a 3-0 lead.

Harrison closed the scoring with 2:04 left, this time on the power play.
